You Get What You Do

THINGS TO REMEMBER 02: You Get What You Do

I'm having a hard time tracking down my source for this one. I know I heard it on a podcast, and it was an interview with a veteran graphic designer. He was talking about when he was starting out in his career and asked one of his design idols how he gets such cool client work. The response was essentially this, "You get what you do." If you want clients that will let you do great work, have great work in your book. If you want to do branding work, have branding work. If you want to paint signs, paint signs! You get more of what you have already done.

I'm paraphrasing (and probably poorly) but the message resonated with me. I've spoken to a lot of designers who have admittedly made up fake projects early on their career to hone their craft and get the experience-- it works!
