Nicotine Injection

Nicotine is classified as a psychoactive organic compound, an element of cigarettes that is known to be more addictive than heroin, and to which are tied a multitude of detrimental health issues. Despite possessing said knowledge about cigarettes, masses of people continue to consume the drug. Why? Perhaps the lack of intravenous injection blinds people to the many horrors that could await them.

This disconnect between cause and consequence inspired me to create a piece that challenges modern society’s continual normalization of cigarette smoking. My aim? Provide an alternative perspective. Why do marketing campaigns glorify smoking? Why is it still, in many places, a desirable cultural attribute? What role does it play in youth and rebellion? Peer pressure?

In terms of techniques, the colour red was used to emphasize the toxicity of nicotine as it is a dynamic colour that attracts attention while simultaneously signalling danger. This ties into the overall aim of the piece being to prevent the perpetuation of the social acceptance of cigarettes and halt the popularization of smoking.
