Last year, both @Danny Giebea and I were working on a mobile step counter that was commissioned by a large electricity provider. The mobile app played into a larger campaign, mostly analog.
Once the most important screen had been identified, we started by exploring various visual directions, before eventually settling on the one that communicated the purpose behind the campaign best.
The core idea behind these two concepts was, the more you walk the more you charge up the lightning bolt or light up the bulbs.
