The Charles E. Gayarre Elementary School, later renamed Oretha Castle Haley Elementary, was built by New Orleans civic architect E.A. Christy around 1920. Named for a well-known Louisiana historian, this building now faces a demolition proposal by the current owners to make room for a strip mall.
