In the UK last week, Parliament quietly passed the Investigatory Powers Act 2016. It has received very little media coverage here. The bill, also known as the Snoopers' Charter has been described as the most intrusive system of any democracy in history and a privacy disaster waiting to happen.
This bill is awaiting royal assent, meaning it can still be repealed. If you're a UK citizen or resident, it's vital that you sign the petition to repeal the Investigatory Powers Act.
Everyone has a stake in guarding our democracy, protecting minorities from suspicionless surveillance, defending protest rights, freedom of the press, and enjoying the freedom to explore and express oneself online.
