CHINESE SLANG CARDS - TÓNGZHÌ

同志 - TÓNGZHÌ
Literally: comrade
Colloquially: gay (or other sexual minorities, to a lesser degree)
There is arguably no single word more important to the communist party than “comrade,” which was once the universal preferred greeting for colleagues and strangers alike. That makes the word’s subversive appropriation by the Chinese LGBT community all the more incredible. The characters that make up the word “comrade” in Chinese literally mean “same purpose”, so it’s a short leap to “same-sex”. Among young people, the original usage of the word has all but died out in favor of the LGBT one.
