Launching my 2nd app on the Mac App store this week and am playing with a new custom UI for the login/Sign up window.

The interaction is such that in a single form you get both sign up and login.

If you fill out your name, then it assumes you want to sign up and the sign up button lights up - pressing enter at that point would also sign up.

If you skip name and put email and password then login lights up and pressing enter at that point logs you in.

The eye icon shows your password in text, and the ? icon submits a forgot password reset form to your email.

Anyway, the app is in review right now, hopefully going live soon!
You can watch a demo video of it here: http://www.vimeo.com/28844803

The whole thing is to dark, I can't see what's going on at all.

I, for one, love the concept and the darkness. It's very spatial and empty, yet so alive.

I'd like to see a little more ambient glow off the form from the mark.

Awesome, but the lack of contrast around the inputs made me think that the placeholder text was actually labels.

A couple of critiques on the design here.

I am standing here with my full brightness on my ACD, looking at the form field. The glossy screen is reflecting my image and I can't see the form fields clearly. I would indeed ask to turn up the contrast a few notches.

What do you think of putting the Forgot Password (?) outside the field ? I think, hierarchy wise, putting the Forgot password (?) outside the form field would be better.

Also, visually there is no distinction between the requisite fields and optional ones. In the first look, I think even a registered user will be prompted to enter all the details including Full Name.

Also, why not center align the buttons, than right ? Would make it more balanced I think.

Nevertheless, a really nice idea for the app. And a damn good intro video. Wishing you all the very best on the launch ;)

Your vortex looks very similar to teleport's one (formerly Jaadu Vnc).

@Matt yeah someone pointed that out before.

@Prathyush I agree there's work to be done with the darkness.
Not sure the forgot password belongs outside, and it would also kind of break the balance.
The fields are required based on the box they are in - assuming you can see the boxes?
Center aligning the buttons... hmmm will try to see what that looks like. :-)

@Rob, great suggestion about the lighting!

@Russell, the placeholder text ARE labels. :-)

Thanks everyone for the feedback and compliments! :-)

looks great and like the hierarchy! I'd ditch the eye icon, but that's just my preference that passwords shouldn't ever be shown as text...

It's nice but way too dark, you can barely see where the fields are.

Perhaps round the edges of the text entry areas to match the boxes. And the button placement just looks slightly strange. Apart from that, it's quite nice :)
