Here is a flow for an email app concept that presents messages as cards. When tapping through one of the cards The top level shows the subject line, the sender and a piece of imagery that is tied to the subject line. The middle level presents information that reminds the recipient of their relationship with the sender and the final layer is the actual email message.

My primary goal in breaking up information about the sender and the sender's message is to give the recipient an opportunity to take in smaller chunks of information rather than trying to distinguish hierarchy on a singular screen.
