It's been a longtime dream of mine to design a character for a historic franchise. That's why I was ecstatic when the agency BooneOakley reached out to me with the specialized task of redesigning the Pizza Inn's historic JoJo character.
Developing a new mascot is one thing. Updating a beloved character that's over 60 years old is another. With that in mind, it was important that we maintained some qualities of the vintage JoJo while evolving some of the others. BooneOakley determined the new brand direction should evoke a sense of neighborly warmth, and be perceived as easygoing, reliable, and proud.
We explored many different options for the face and body before landing on a great direction that fully captured the new brand direction.
