Taking Spiking Seriously

This project came about as part of one of my university modules; titled ‘Web and Mobile’, a module which saw students create a desktop website design and mobile prototyping outcomes for one of six design briefs. One of the briefs allowed students to select a Creative Conscience Award brief as a basis for their project.

Creative Conscience’s Open Brief gives students the chance to create a project that deals with any issue they are passionate about solving; identifying something that isn’t working in the world, and looking for a solution. Initially, when I think of something that I am passionate about solving, my mind jumps to the recent stories about increased drink spiking and the terrifying new stories of injection spiking.

My idea for action is ‘Taking Spiking Seriously’, an organisation that aims to stamp out any cases of spiking in licensed premises or private parties, via method of drink, drugs or injection. A study in 2016 found 71% of spiking victims to be female, showing that this group would need to be the primary target audience for the organisation. The service would not discriminate in any form however - anyone who felt that they are in danger, nervous or concerned about being spiked would be able to contact Taking Spiking Seriously - but younger women would be the initial campaign target group.

As a young woman, I do feel anxious on a night out; increasingly so due to recent events. I have been thinking more about the clothes I wear, what I take with me, the status of my drink, where my friends are, who is around us, and how I plan to travel home. I feel that I, personally, could benefit from the services that Taking Spiking Seriously would offer and know that this would be welcome both locally in the North East and further afield.
