PROJECT - Vizlib Legends Logo

This is the logo for 'Vizlib Legends', a program for Vizlib to hold up, congratulate and utilise people within the Qlik Data Visualisation industry as champions of knowledge.

I was tasked with coming up with a new logo for the 2022 cohort. The previous logo (which I had designed in haste the year before) was fine, but left a lot to be desired.

The project manager wanted the final logo to be more colourful and unique. They also wanted it to take the shape of a more classic shield if possible.

We sat down and discussed possible inspiration and decided to try inspiration from video games, specifically the aesthetic of collectible items or lootboxes. This was because we felt all the other logos for this kind of program were flat and very corporate while we wanted something more interesting and unique.

The games we discussed borrowing aesthetics from were Zelda and Mariokart. These served as inspiration but I also ended up taking inspiration from the impossible architecture games 'Monument Valley'.

This was the progress for the Legends badge. I was experimenting with different possibilities for the shield shape when I noticed that the bottom of the shield looked quite 3D and I got the idea for impossible geometry all at once.

I tried to work it so that the top of the shield was curved, but it didn't really work, so I went back to basics and blocked out the surfaces with different colours so I could see what I was doing.

Each year, 30-50 individuals in the dataviz industry are chosen and the final 'Legends' were sent a gift box with luxury high quality Vizlib Legends merch. This was the box lid.

Part of the package was a notebook inscribed with each individuals name. This was the back of the notebook which was a design made of the logo deconstructed in the style of Monument Valley. Also a backpack.

These are some of the stickers which we had printed on thick vinyl with a holographic finish. Honestly the photo doesn't do them justice. The design of the shield which utilises metallic gradients throughout looked FANTASTIC on holographic vinyl.
