This is something I've been trying to do procedurally for a while: have actual geometry (not textures) "crawl" along the surface of a model. I'm attaching the wireframe as "proof". This isn't a robust solution at the moment, but I was able to control the attributes of motion and give it a kind of snapping, mechanical nature rather than just smooth (which is of course the easiest
