I work at Webtrends and I design a lot of trend charts. I rebounded your shot with one of the biggest things I've learned about tooltips on charts.
That is, the little floaty tooltips you see on most of the charting libraries out there result in this weird experience of having the tooltip follow your mouse around. Some people like this, but I'm not a fan. Creating a place the user can consistently see the data, as in the rebound, reduces the amount of eye tracking they have to do.
Anyway, probably waaay too much feedback, but maybe it will be helpful. We use this pattern in all our charts and I personally think it kicks ass. :-)
