I designed this icon for a brand new image compression app called Squash. The metaphor was picked to suggest that slimming down an image could be as simple, fun, and rewarding as peeling an orange.
Here's a short walkthrough of the design process, from the initial sketch [chosen out of a set of 6 possible concepts] to the final polish on the small sizes. The icon began as a concept sketch, then it was modeled in 3D, rendered out as masks and texture passes, and illustrated fully in 2D over the course of several design sessions. I even bought some oranges for reference (and eating)!
