Marion Design Installation

My inspiration for this design came from my belief that change is the only true constant in the human experience. Just as a river consistently shifts and affects the environment around it, our circumstances and conflicts will change not only us, but the places we invest our lives in. We can channel the change we encounter through our dreams and visions. We can dream for our families, our futures, and the places we live. I have a vision for Marion, Indiana; every store front is full of thriving boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants. People are riding their bikes around the square, walking with their kids, and exploring the thriving downtown. I have a vision for the community that could thrive here.

This show was an attempt to grasp at a new life for Marion. I have constructed a framework that I hope entices the viewer to dream with me. As a designer, I see the potential in the broken and worn down spaces. I desire to convey a new perspective and potential for Marion to my viewers. I believe the story of Marion is a story that deserves to be told.

In order to dream about the potential of a place, one must first identify the viewer. The viewer is important in this case as they will be the ones being challenged to carry out the change initiated in the design prompts. Ultimately the viewer is who the show is for. This show is for the diverse general public that reside in Marion as well as the community of Indiana Wesleyan University.

This show is an invitation to dream. You are a part of a place that has an incredible story, full of rich history and brewing potential. Beauty once graced the streets of Marion, but the town no longer bustles with people and the buildings and storefronts now lie empty reckless path of change has knocked Marion to its knees in surrender. We, as the community, cannot give up and forget its story. We cannot stop dreaming about what Marion can be. Will you choose to direct that change or at least dare to dream about it?

This piece is a challenge for you. It is a challenge to begin to channel change in a positive way. Be a part of the story that is unfolding in front of your eyes. The beauty and history of this town can be touched again.

This show is now a permanent installation in Marion, Indiana, encouraging people to dream about the community they live in.
