The New Normal Page (2021 Content Marketing Award Winner)

The Challenge

At the onset of COVID, there was not a defined site to help guide your career or business through the difficulties of the pandemic.

Perhaps the most obvious impact of COVID-19 on the labor force is the dramatic increase in employees working remotely. To determine how extensively remote work might persist after the pandemic, we analyzed its potential across more than 2,000 tasks used in some 800 occupations in the eight focus countries. Considering only remote work that can be done without a loss of productivity, we find that about 20 to 25 percent of the workforces in advanced economies could work from home between three and five days a week.

This represents four to five times more remote work than before the pandemic and could prompt a large change in the geography of work, as individuals and companies shift out of large cities into suburbs and small cities.

The Goal

The goal of this site was to allow people, from the business community and the job seeker side, a place to access articles, data, advice and connections to their peers and community during the start of COVID.

Performing a task analysis allowed me to easily walk through the flow to identify the key screens necessary to understand how users would navigate the task of finding an article, data points important to them, or a webinar. Some key things needed to understand: How they arrived at the site (for example, entering from Facebook; Instagram or email), where they go as they move through the site, and finally the end of the process where they get the email confirmation. Understanding this flow is vital to the creation of the site and helped us set up the user flow.

Execution: Design

Before the pandemic, we estimated that just 6 percent of workers would need to find jobs in higher wage occupations. In our post-COVID-19 research, we find not only that a larger share of workers will likely need to transition out of the bottom two wage brackets but also that roughly half of them overall will need new, more advanced skills to move to occupations one or even two wage brackets higher.

After establishing a rough idea of how the site will flow, I began building out quick digital wireframes to give me a more accurate and practical look. All the while keeping in focus the user feedback I'd already received.

I started the design process by creating specific blocks of content, typeface and background color combinations for different use cases. To create visual hierarchy on the page, I used good visual design concepts of color and contrast.

Social Media Integration

I also created a series of videos to drive users to the site. Running these videos on both Facebook and Instagram, had great engagement and assisted in this project becoming a huge success.
