Book Cover Design - Avant Garde Baking

Avant Garde Baking is a cook book of unconventional recipes and my task was to break the sedate cook book mold.

With publishers trying to keep readers interested into 2022 and new cook book authors keen to have their books stand out on the shelf, I took a modern approach, eschewing the usual cover of sedate woman cooking or a delicious pie sitting on a table, but a dessert tumbling through the air in chaos, disrupting the brightly-coloured headline, to arrest the browser’s attention.

Trends this year in color express the tension of chaos and calm as we move out of the pandemic, so I took my inspiration for the cover from Pantone’s New York Spring/Summer 2022 colour insights, using a calming Spun Sugar-inspired shade of soft blue and a vibrant pink, based on Pantone’s Innuendo, both delicious, enticing colors.

With the explosive cover and intense color contrasts, I created balance by making the structure of the recipe pages more uniform and traditional, giving readers a sense of the familiar as well as adventure.
