Type appreciation
Type is art.
As designers we look at letters daily if not hourly. And any designer will tell you after several hours of type finessing, words don't look like words anymore. Letters lose their meaning. They start to morph into abstract forms, much like an artist sees their canvas. Just shapes on a page.
Type systems are so infused into our everyday communication that we forget letters and combinations of letters have been assigned meaning over thousands of years, slowly simplified down to what they are today. Without that meaning, they are strange scribbles on a page. Letters only have meaning because we assigned them meaning. Art is only art when you say it is.
Our team at Focus Lab used the beautifully crafted typeface Signifier by Klim Type Foundry as one of the fonts in the type system for our client, Tighten.
