Textarea UI

I've always found issues with the text area in how they don't fit very well with other form items. With this format, the default is narrow but it expands when more text is entered and the character counter (optional) shows how many characters left. If the user enters text beyond a certain height, a scrollbar will allow the user to read through. Much like the one I'm typing in now.
