The Railroad to the West

The Railroad to the West is a tycoon mobile game where you manage a railroad company in the middle of 19th century of USA.

This is a personal project made as an exercise of art direction and game interface.

It took me 5 or 6 months on my spare time and it was great to deep dive on history, to understand how to position the game at a specific time in American history and how to translate the aesthetics of that time in a way that could work as a game.

The lore of the game is the progress being carried to the west by the railroads, so the pillars of art direction should convey an era of evolution and progress for America. Things like dirty, rust or aspects commonly seen in games like Red Dead Redemption were intentionally avoided.

I made everything from art direction to 3D scene and props, illustrations, logo, icons and the user interface itself. The game's UX was not considered here, since my focus was only on the research, exploration and creation of an appropriated visual language for the game.

Yeah, it was an exhausting but also fun and full of precious lessons exercise :)
