Poster Sigson's snowflakes

Photographer Andrey Sigson worked in Rybinsk, Russia at the end of the 19th century. He shot portraits, landscapes and restored old photographs.

He was the first Russian photographer to take photos of the snowflakes. Due to the fragility of snow, Sigson invented his own photography technique: he caught snowflakes on felt, selected one snowflake and dropped it onto a silk net, then placed it under the microscope. To keep the snowflakes from melting, he cooled his hands and breathed through a tube to deflect air aside. Because of his hobby, the townspeople considered him as an eccentric, and due to regular hypothermia, he developed rheumatism of hands.

On November 30, 2020 it turns 180 years from the date of his birth. Last time a poster with photographs of snowflakes was published before the 1917 Russian Revolution. We decided to re-print a limited edition to pay homage to the crazy ones and to revive the memory of this talented man.
