Four Four Two – When Football Pranks Go Wrong

We were just walking along the seafront after a night out,” recalled ex Scotland star Sandy Jardine, “and wee Jimmy for some reason got into one of the row boats with no oars.” Following a “wee kick” from Jardine, Celtic and Scotland legend Jimmy Johnstone was cast adrift at sea off the coast of Largs, Ayrshire, a few days before a Home International with England in May 1974. When the coastguard eventually picked him up a few hours later, the rapidly sobered up Johnstone claimed unconvincingly: “I was fishing.”
