Not all devices have simultaneous voice and data. Gruber made a big point that user's didn't care. Well that's because most apps rely on data, and voice only becomes a problem if you're on a phone call. Everything is data.

But these days these two systems are more closely linked. They are connected but it's a lot of duct tape, still.
