I wonder why this didn't happen.
The world may never know.

It should be like this.
I wonder every single time I look at that icon.
I wonder you go back to Apple.
@Ray That doesn't solve any problem at all.
The Game Center icon feels like it wasn't updated for iOS 7 to me, but I keep it in a folder. Well done, Louie, creating the icon that should have been.
This is much nicer and fits better with iOS. All the other icons are flat with minimal detail yet the Game Center icon is the only one with detail and shine.
This video makes more sense of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO3rsfE7GM0. They're emulating the look and feel of the plastic 'fun'/'cute' iPhone 5c.
(still ugly though)
It makes sense knowing that the icons were given to different teams to create and you can't say they didn't try to make it beautiful, unlike most of the other icons. (settings, reminders, news stand, photo booth ...).
I personally think it's the only icon that got it right.
Yes totally agree with this!
I like to think the single skeuomorphic app icon is part of Forstall's contract or something.
Gawd! Why isn't the Game Center icon like this?
Great work man!
This is far more in line with the other iOS7 icons aesthetic. With that said, as iconic representation goes - Had I not already known this was the game center icon, I would have no clue what this represents.
This isn't a knock on your excellent interpretation @Louie Mantia - but more on the design decisions Apple made initially.
Game center = 4 overlapping colorful circles. Because circles are colorful and fun...like games, amiright? ;P
Given how much they joked about Game Center in the press conference I expected them to make it flatter than flat eric.
They should have done this, shame they didn't :-(
I agree. The new icon doesnt fit the design language. The same with the reminders app's paper texture.
Nice work man!
Indeed, this should be the icon
The icon reminds me of the classical swedish candy bags that were used in gas stations and smaller kiosks where you buy candy in bulk during the 90's.
One things for certain, it's not like they haven't considered it as the obvious choice.
I think they made this choice because unlike most apps for iOS7, games are not flat.
Better than the one used in iOS 7, but still this whole bubbles concept is a bit ridiculous.
Agreed, new icon is not flat... this is so much better.
I suppose that Apple decided to put realistic bubbles on the icon as they are they are used in the animation you see after entering the game center - this nice animation won't have the same aspect with flat bubbles. Anyway, the bubbles are just not the right symbol for the game center.
