Benin Culture Tribute

A new book I’m illustrating has a story line that travels between Australia and Africa, so I’ve been spending a lot of time researching African culture, ceremonial clothing and of course music 😉

Growing up in Africa I was fortunate enough to be exposed to so many of the rich cultures that have moulded and shaped the continent. European, Asian, Indian, the neighbouring islands of Mauritius and Reunion as well as the rest of the subcontinent.

This piece was inspired by Angelique Kidjo's song “Agolo” which is steeped in the rich culture and spirituality of Benin. Her music was a big part of my childhood and every time I saw the video for Agolo it was mystical and awe inspiring experience.

Benin is also the birth place voodoo and it’s influence is still seen in every aspect of Beninese culture, as well as the video for Agolo which heavily feature ceremonial masks, symbology and mysticism. 🇧🇯
