“In the name of God, for our freedom and yours” is one of the unofficial mottos of Poland. It was most likely authored by Joachim Lelewel and during the November Uprising of 1830. The initial banner, with a red cross on white background had inscriptions in both Polish and Russian. The Exhibition "For Freedom" was opened to the public on November 11th, Polish Independence Day — a date which reminds us all that freedom requires participation. The question about the relationship of freedom and democracy is crucial, not only for artistic work, but also for defining identity more generally. In the shadow of nationalist movements growing across Europe and world, the exhibition took Lelewel’s motto as a starting point, and argued that there can be no freedom without solidarity.
