Old work (>1year) that I recently came across photos of online—printed on a panel of a wood box.

@Joseph Alessio Not as a insult to this piece, but your lettering has improved immensely...(I'm jealous and need to work on mine) Also I just moved to a Liberty St. and couldn't help but think about that awesome piece you did.

@Chris Absolutely, it's great to compare work from a year or 2 years ago to current projects! Always fun to see progress demonstrated clearly.

Definitely, you should work on it! All it really takes is practice and a good dose of research. Some people try to do it without any research, and some people research but don't practice (which is my downfall—I feel sometimes like I've spent far too much time reading about type history/type design than practicing my lettering), but with a good amount of both you can't go wrong. It's a lot of fun and always rewarding.

@Joseph Alessio Yep! I am totally the research first guy. I came across a piece you wrote a while back that I believe talked about the history of different serif type. Any chance you have a link lying around? It was a lengthy piece and I meant to go back to it. Thanks!

@Chris Ah sure, it was most likely this one on Smashing Magazine—a rundown on type classification, which necessarily includes a lot of type history as well! As a matter of fact, I'm working on the second part (which covers the sans categories) right now, so it should be published in not too long—keep an eye out for it!
