I wrote some musings on the possible direction iOS 7 might take given various themes and trends I've noticed in iOS design recently.

The gradient is strange. And I'm pretty sure that it can be much better by modifying the shadows and texture.

Nice work. I found your article on Sidebar and I like this direction.

I enjoyed the article, but would love for the icon to have been pushed a little bit more, just seems as though you took the gradient and sheen off without much other thought. I understand it's Apple and they have their own style, but this still feels to "safe" an option. It probably is an accurate representation of where they'll go, though.

But... I wanted to cringe when you decided to keep Helvetica Neue for the text to go under the button, regardless of whether or not it was a bigger size... it's just not a typeface that I think should be used in UI, especially on phones. I think that itself warrants a whole new discussion!

  10. My take on the new Messages icon. I could possibly see iMessages being more prominent in iOS7. I can see more emphasis being on the blues than traditional SMS green.

Possible design integration with the already established OSX icon as well?

Also struggled with a good background colour too... Could do with some tweaking.

Article is pretty good. But the Messages icon shape looks wonky. Mainly the bottom curve of the extender, it's not a graceful arch it's clunky. The use of the outer glow is too overt as well. If this is all Apple is going to do it'll be viewed as a massive failure IMO. The rounded corners need to be depreciated in the next iteration of iOS otherwise the dated aesthetic will still be viewed as the same.

  16. Great article @destroywerk (Tim Green). Mimicking the google approach to their Gmail icon, this is what I would envision the messages icon looking like.

None of the rebounds seem to capture Apple's style. The original image by @Tim Green though, is absolutely perfect. Let's hope WWDC brings something as good as this!

    Edit: How wrong I was...
