iOS7 Concept - Reminders

Spent half an hour last night imagining what iOS 7 will look like under Jonathan Ive's vision.  I would be okay with it turning out something like this.  What do you think? Would be interesting to see some rebounds.

(I've attached a screenshot of the current iOS6 very skeuomorphic version for comparison.)

I like the look and feel. The problem is that its still skeuomorphic: its still using the metaphor of paper to write down your "to-dos". I love the design that you have, but I'm wondering if Apple will still use these metaphors in their design.

@Timothy Whalin I completely agree that it is still skeuomorphic. I just don't see Apple taking such a huge risk and completely changing the UI that their users have grown to love. I have a feeling they will pull back things like the intense textures, but keep the same overall familiar design.

@Timothy Whalin @Dan Lebowitz I'm on the fence about what they will do. I would love to see Apple do something completely different, leaving metaphors out of their new design and reinvigorating an OS that seems very out of date for its age. To me, I think they need something thats more extreme than this shot, it needs to be something new entirely, the shot itself is lovely though, really nice and clean!

@Jocelyn Richard Touché. Should have probably stuck with Helvetica, hah.

People think they hate skeuomorphism. They don't. They hate the annoying, eye-sandpaper textures and communicative non sequiturs that Apple has used on several of their less-than-stellar products. Skeuomorphism is an important tool for conveyance (visual communication of purpose and function without the need for a manual or constant reminders), and is a great way to alleviate the learning curve with something new by providing a visual metaphor.

This mockup demonstrates perfectly how the Apple's visual style, skeuomorphism and all, can effectively communicate intended use and and available functionality without getting in its own way.

@Matt Legrand Thank you man, I could not agree more. If Apple launched all of iOS7 looking something like this I would be very pleased.

@Dan Lebowitz great concept. I agree with you that they may start with this type of refinement. I do agree with @Jocelyn Richard as well, iOS 7 will either stick with Helvetica or move to a nicer font, Avenir. They have already moved to Avenir in Maps and added it as a default in both iOS and OS X.

Nice work Dan. Do you know if iOS7 is officially going to be announced in June? Or are these just rumors?

@David Kovalev Thanks! I believe they always debut at least some form of iOS beta at WWDC in June. The description on the landing page reads "Get an in-depth look at what’s next in iOS and OS X".

@Dan Lebowitz I see, well just by looking at that graphic on the site, doesn't look too flat... but that might just be for the marketing side of things. We'll just have to wait and find out.

@Dan Lebowitz @Kyle Adams Nice shot by the way. And yes, Avenir would be *great* as iOS's default.

!! I can see a skeumorphic highlight running accross the top of the header bar! Waaaay too much depth for where Ive is heading, IMHO! But really nice though- great use of dribbble to spark discussion!

Also - it still resembles a printed piece of paper.... I think we're heading to aplace where its about the concept of a note, a reminder, and the capturing of that content without the UI needing to fallback on real-world objects and textures to have meaning and familiarity. :)

Looks nice, but you guys should know that just because this whole 'flat design' trend came about, it doesn't mean that Apple will completely shift their entire perspective on app and general design sense, regardless of who is head of design.

There will definitely be tweaks, but don't expect it to look like LayerVault designed iOS 7.
