Eel

A distinct, snake-like fish that can grow to a metre in length and live for up to 100 years. They are listed as a critically endangered species, with decline in numbers down to over-fishing, loss of habitat and river pollution. The eel has an incredible migration to breed, they are born in the Sargasso Sea, an area of the west Atlantic Ocean. After about 3 years of swimming the Gulf stream they reach the UK and Europe as tiny elvers and develop in freshwater rivers.
