Graphic Designer Associate
The graphic designer uses design—print and electronic—to tell visual stories, and is able to collaborate with and contribute a creative perspective to colleagues across UIC’s Advancement office. This person conceptualizes and creates print and digital design assets that bring our content to life in magazines, electronic newsletters, direct-mail pieces, on the Web, via social media and more. He or she is enthusiastic, engaged and creative with a can-do attitude, and has a comprehensive understanding of visual communication principles and sufficient knowledge of HTML and web usability. The graphic designer’s work will depict UIC’s stature as a premier public, urban, research institution; amplify UIC’s and the IGNITE Campaign’s identity and brands; while helping inform, engage and inspire alumni, donors, friends, faculty, staff, students and community members.
Job Responsibilities (Essential Duties)
· Create final, production-ready print and digital graphic assets
· Contribute design to projects across mediums, including: Web sites, e-newsletters, magazines, social media channels, video, mailings, event collateral and more.
· Develop templates, tools, and other assets to be used across the advancement function
· Serve internal clients including the UIC Alumni Association, participation team, stewardship, Advancement services.
· Actively participate in creative conversations and brainstorming sessions with various functional teams
· Work within and help reinforce the visual identity, brand standards, tone and messaging for UIC and the IGNITE Campaign
· Stay abreast of marketing and design trends and best practices across all print and digital
· Work with external vendors as needed
· Perform other duties as assigned to further the goals of the Advancement office
Job Knowledge & Skills, Education, Experience
1. Any one or any combination that equals thirty-six (36) months from the categories below1:
o credit for progressively more advanced college or art-school course work that would lead to a major in graphic/visual arts communication and/or design
§ 60 semester hours equals 12 months
§ 90 semester hours equals 24 months
§ 120 semester hours or a Bachelor's Degree equals 36 months
o work experience and/or on-the-job training that provided knowledge of progressively more advanced, generally accepted principles, theories, practices, and methods used in graphic designs and their applications to visual communications problems that are/is comparable to the training provided in the programs such as graphic/visual arts communication and/or design
2. Twelve (12) months of progressively more responsible work experience and/or training comparable to that performed at the Graphic Designer Assistant level of this series
1A Master's Degree in visual design, with emphasis in visual arts communication or a closely related field, meets all minimum acceptable qualifications for the Graphic Designer Associate level of this series.
· Demonstrated multi-faceted design experience and ability to use design to impact outcomes
· Ability to develop multiple creative solutions for a given project, from concept to completion
· Strong artistic ability
· Motion graphics, photography and/or illustration skills/experience a plus
· Solid understanding of creating graphics for a Web environment, including HTML and CSS design
· Ability to work and problem solve independently and within a team, and to juggle multiple projects and priorities at once
· Excellent organization, time- and project-management and relationship-building skills necessary to work in a large, complex organization
· Proficiency with industry standard software, including the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects). Experience working with Microsoft Office products
· Must submit work samples with application to be considered for the position
Demonstrated experience with art direction, for example creating and executing a creative direction.
