The Assistant Director of Digital Communications is responsible for executing and measuring the University of Illinois at Chicago Office of the Vice Chancellor of Advancement’s (OVCA) digital strategy. The incumbent will bring to life the IGNITE campaign priorities and the university’s mission—to transform lives and provide the broadest access to the highest levels of intellectual excellence—across digital channels, including social media, Web sites and email. The successful candidate will grow alumni, friend and donor audiences; generate awareness; and inspire giving by curating, creating and adapting written and visual content for digital media. The incumbent will collaborate closely with colleagues in the central advancement office, colleges and offices across the university. This person is a savvy and outgoing self-starter with a can-do attitude.  

Job Responsibilities (Essential Duties)

·        Write original content and adapt existing content for alumni and donor audiences.

·        Create and maintain a master editorial plan for all digital channels.

·        Develop a witty, intelligent and relatable voice for UIC Alumni Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds and write informative and compelling posts and stories.

·        Collaborate with the graphic designer to develop smart, eye-catching visuals appropriate to each channel.

·        Engage audiences in a conversation by responding to inquiries and comments.

·        Update the OVCA Web site regularly with fresh, inspiring stories and imagery.

·        Manage OVCA’s SharePoint intranet site to ensure it is accurate and up to date.

·        Prepare regular analytics reports and share insights and ideas to improve performance.

·        Work within and help reinforce the visual identity, brand standards, tone and messaging for UIC and the IGNITE Campaign.

·        Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices; offer thought leadership.

Job Knowledge & Skills, Education, Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, or a related field.
  2. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in public relations, journalism, social media communications, newspaper reporting, radio/television broadcasting with emphasis on production, or web/digital media.
  3. Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.

Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

·        Exceptional writing and storytelling skills with working knowledge of AP Style.

·        Fluency with social media platforms and a strong grasp of social media landscape and trends.

·        Excellent organization, time- and project-management and relationship-building skills necessary to work in a large, complex organization.

·        Must be comfortable working in an office environment and out and about to capture content; successful working independently and as part of a team.

·        A rich understanding of digital and social media, HTML, email marketing, Web site management and copy writing.

·        Adept at tracking and analyzing Web traffic, social engagement and email results.

·        Experience with Google Analytics, WordPress and SharePoint a strong plus.

Demonstrated experience with managing multiple social media feeds for a large, complex organization.
