Principal Interface Designer (remote)

We envision a world where we can contribute to a better understanding for effective aid development through the lens of open data and data visualization. Zimmerman is a data information technology company that specialises in making data meaningful through visualization tooling and dashboards. We are looking for a digital innovator that will help us in shaping our current suite of products to the next level.

We are looking for a creative, highly motivated self-starter with attention to detail and an eye for a beautiful, clean user interface who can translate complex data sets into effective visualizations that live on top of open source software we build, enabling us to tell a broader story to our users. 

You have a good understanding of data and have hands-on experience with translating data to modern user interfaces that clearly communicate and are more than just a flat representation of numbers, graphs and facts. You will understand the narrative that will surface for insights, trends, pattern recognition and data exploration. You have hidden data science capabilities that allow you to see that narrative and build an immersive user experience that will drive the user interfaces.

You will be the key member on the Zimmerman team collaborating closely with our data engineers, business leadership, partners and customers in the humanitarian sector.

This position is remote, do feel free to apply if you feel a fit with this opening. As we operate under the CET timezone, take into account we will not take applications into consideration that are off by CET +3 hrs as you will not be able to participate in our daily operations.

This position opens in November of this year.

What you will be doing

  • From (complex) data sets, create beautiful data visualizations that tell a story to inform, facilitate exploration, and surface insights to our users.

  • Provide design updates to our data products 

  • Join our team in developing a new and forward thinking data visualization language for various types of interactive data visualizations and dashboards that we have developed for our Zimmerman products.

  • Coordinate work closely with the Design System to ensure design consistency across products, and create assets and specifications that can be used.

  • Collaborate closely with our team and external relations.

  • Welcome feedback about your designs and offer constructive feedback to other team members.

  • Create innovative concepts. Provide specifications and final assets when necessary.

  • Stay in the loop and on top of the latest standards, changes, trends in the data visualization field.

  • Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to deliver end-to-end projects and services in our office. Due to the nature of this work, remote work will be considered.

  • Prototype and iterate designs to correct and optimize user flows

  • Proficiency throughout the entire design process from formulating high-level strategy to executing pixel-perfect mockups.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years industry experience as a UX or Visual Designer, showcasing an excellent design portfolio.

  • Demonstrated experience with interactive data visualization, visual analytics, and/or design for data analytics.

  • You are able to communicate ideas through sketches, storyboarding, wireframes and mock-ups, all the way down to pixel perfect design as needed.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of data visualization principles and best practices.

  • Deep understanding of visual design disciplines (typography, iconography, composition, color, layout, etc.); ability to create beautiful, dynamic, functional designs in a breadth of styles.

  • Strong attention to detail and design consistency.

  • Understanding of UX/UI design principles and processes.

  • Knowledge of Prototyping is a plus.

  • Experience designing products for data driven environments is a plus.

  • Proficient with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Zeplin, InVision, Adobe Creative Suite and Keynote.

  • Experience working within an Agile environment is a plus.

Lastly but not least:

  • A positive attitude: You’re a team player and you’re resilient in the face of challenges.

  • Fluency (or proficiency) in English.

  • Experience in working in Global/International development is a plus.

Education

Degree in UX, Visual Design or equivalent experience required.

  • Temporary contract for 3 months with the possibility of extension for 6 months or longer

  • Visits to Amsterdam for hybrid session in our office

  • We are looking for a new team member who wants to join us for 4 days a week (32 hours).
