Digital Art Director

About Studio Simpatico

We are an energetic and highly collaborative creative design and development team of five, in the heart of New York City. Our work spans brand development, UX design, digital product design, web design and web development. Our small team is comprised of industry veterans from Google, Apple, and NYC's leading agencies. We've worked at the big places, and love and prefer the perks of being small: it allows us to be choosy and selective, and only take the projects that make us the most excited and inspired. As a Glassdoor review reads ...

"Lots of opportunities to get your hands on any aspect of the business that interests you. No real silos to speak of. If you like working on small, creative teams, this is a great place."

Our Work

Our clients are a diverse group — we’ve worked with B2B tech firms, media companies, NPOs, financial platforms, consumer products, fashion brands, and many more. A few of our favorite projects include our full, holistic redesigns for OK! Magazine and NaNoWriMo, our ongoing work with larger clients like MM.LaFleur and Gensler, and design and development work for a myriad of up and coming startups (PromoteIQ, Canopy Foods, Even Financial, and more).

About the Position

This is a highly hands-on position that also requires ownership of every step of a project. You need to be able to “take it and run with it!” We love brainstorming and working as a group, but you will be leading ideation, concepting, visual design, and client management while communicating with the client in person and online throughout the project. If you are seeking creative autonomy, and taking creative projects from idea to launch, then you might be a perfect fit!

Requirements

  • Ability to primarily work onsite in our New York City office;
  • 4+ years of experience as a visual creative, ideally focused on branding, web design, and/or digital product design;
  • Portfolio of relevant work;
  • Excellent understanding of core design principles including typography, grids, color theory, and layout;
  • Experience and a desire to lead every phase of a project including concepting, wireframing, visual design, client meetings, and client/project management. This does not mean that the candidate will be working alone, rather that they will take the lead on entire projects;
  • Extensive experience working in Sketch;
  • Adequate experience with core Adobe Creative Suite apps, particularly Adobe Illustrator;
  • Working understanding of how HTML/CSS works in implementing web and digital product designs. The candidate will not be expected to write code;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as the role requires communicating with and managing clients;
  • Ability to manage working on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and setting client expectations;
  • A willingness to collaborate, and provide and receive constructive feedback.

Nice to Have

  • BFA/BA in visual design or a pertinent field;
  • Experience uploading content to WordPress;
  • Willingness to write blog posts and case studies regarding studio work;
  • Willingness to create content for and post on studio social media accounts.

Benefits

  • Creative autonomy and project ownership;
  • A close-knit, positive work environment;
  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience;
  • Health insurance;
  • Free subscriptions to professional development resources;
  • Paid design/development conference (with approval);
  • Light travel to visit our out-of-state clients; (so far we've been to: Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Nashville, Denver, and Boulder)
  • 401K match coming this summer;
  • Whatever snacks you want (just voice your requests on our snacks Slack channel)
