Operations Designer

Zipline is at the forefront of a logistics revolution, using battery powered autonomous aircraft to deliver just-in-time, lifesaving medical supplies around the world and we’re looking for motivated, proactive team members to join us.

At Zipline, we live our core values of transparency, servant leadership and customer centricity. Our team’s collaborative nature combined with a high-energy environment means we tackle seeming impossible challenges together.

Our flight and fulfillment operators drive Zipline - their ability to operate and maintain our hardware systems is paramount to Zipline’s success. As an Operations Designer, your job is to help them do this as easily and efficiently as possible by creating simple, streamlined processes for maintaining and modifying hardware, and communicating those processes to operators. This requires a deep understanding of Zipline’s hardware systems, operational environment, and the ability to easily translate between those two worlds. You will be responsible for all standard operating procedures (SOPs) where operators interact with our hardware - identifying problems, proposing solutions, and driving our continuous improvement process.

Within 1 month you will

  • Ramp up on Zipline’s systems, using hands-on training to learn how our software, hardware, and operations systems work together to deliver life-saving medical supplies
  • Create new processes and SOPs for operators to use to perform field rework and maintenance
  • Take over and manage Zipline’s tools for SOP revision control, access, and logging, and define requirements and workflows for the next-generation tool that will allow us to maintain operational excellence while scaling operations globally
  • Travel to our test sites and distribution centers in California and Rwanda to understand the operational environment

Within 3 months you will

  • Build out our next-generation tool for SOP management
  • Build and maintain systems to measure the efficiency of our hardware procedures, and continuously improve hardware procedures to make operations easier, faster, and foolproof
  • Develop a common vocabulary and visual library to make SOPs consistent and familiar for operators
  • Ensure our SOPs can be used in any country, by people with all levels of English knowledge.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Experience writing procedures and technical documentation, with a knack for translating between operators and engineers
  • Able to quickly understand technical systems you may not have expertise in
  • Experience operating remote hardware assets using documented procedures
  • Able to understand an operator’s challenges and perspective; able to wrangle engineers and lead brainstorming and troubleshooting efforts
  • Able to ruthlessly prioritize issues, ask questions, and escalate issues to drive problems to resolution.
  • Proven ability to take extreme ownership and build processes from the ground up
  • Experience working with document management systems
  • Ensure all SOPs are globally understood, with consideration for language and culture diversity
  • Must be willing to travel locally and internationally
  • Must be eligible to work in the US
