Associate Graphic Designer

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decisionmakers concerned with global security and prosperity. The iDeas Lab, the award-winning creative and digital production department at CSIS, and the Office of External Relations seeks a highly motivated and creative self-starter to join our dynamic and fast-paced environment as a Designer starting immediately.

The iDeas Lab enhances CSIS's policy research and analysis with the latest in cutting-edge web technologies, design, and video. The designer will work closely with the department on creative projects that tell compelling public policy stories, partnering with some of the most respected foreign policy experts and researchers.

This is an ideal opportunity for a designer with strong print, editorial, branding, and graphics experience and who brings a passion for creating compelling products. The successful candidate will have strong creative initiative and independent self-direction, coupled with an aptitude for design and collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team. Additionally, the candidate will be a team player, possess excellent communication and project management skills, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and innovative environment while meeting tight deadlines.


Essential duties and responsibilities

• Design and execution of a range of CSIS publication products per established styles including policy briefs, white papers, reports, newsletters, and handouts.

• Lead low- to mid-range custom, editorial design projects and support other designers with more advanced or larger efforts.

• Design and produce other types of visuals for projects as needed for print and digital projects, including illustrations, infographics, and all other types of graphic design for web and print.

• Design and execution of a range of CSIS branding and marketing products/materials including social media graphics, event materials, business cards, stationery updates, e-mail banners, and presentation materials/templates.

• Design and create a range of printed marketing collateral for high level CSIS events and functions, fundraising efforts, and other outreach initiatives.

• Design and create graphics and data visualizations for use on the web, print, and social media.

• Develop ideas and design/execute visualizations for print- and web-based projects in partnership with other department staff and CSIS research programs.

• Serve as mentor and design reviewer for junior designers on the above stream of work and related project management and representation.

• Other duties and projects as needed


Knowledge, education, and experience

• B.A./B.S in relevant field;

• Minimum of two years of relevant experience;

• Deep knowledge of and strong experience with composition/layout, typography, print design and production processes;

• Strong knowledge of the fundamentals of graphic design, especially print design and data visualizations; with an eye for engaging and artful design;

• Strong creative vision and skills, and clean design aesthetic;

• Strong knowledge and experience in all applicable software and computer applications (including Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, and other web-based programs and tools);

• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; including effectively presenting information to non-technical partners, operating in a fast-paced environment and managing competing priorities;

• Strong attention to detail, initiative, and follow through skills;

• Strong interest in global affairs and public policy;

• Sound judgement, maturity, and discretion.
