  • Week 1
    Introduction

Learn about how to approach this process with intention and how to think about the job hunting process.

Finding any role can be easier done than finding the best role for you. Having a clearer idea of what you’re looking for can make the portfolio and interviewing process a lot easier.

This week, you will think through how to approach the job hunting process more intentionally. This sets you up for success in the later weeks and ensures you improve your hit rate longer-term.

  • Week 2
    Understanding the Hunt

Understand what types of environments and people you will meet in your career.

When job hunting, your success rates greatly increase if you know what you’re looking for. In this week you learn what type of environments are available in tech, what other roles influence the design discipline, and what hiring managers are looking for.

Once you have a handle on that, it’s much easier to figure out how to build the best portfolio to seek your ideal role. This week, you will start the project brief process so you can continue to improve your job hunting skills.

  • Week 3
    Collecting Portfolio Pieces

Collect or create the content which will make up the bulk of your portfolio.

When you understand what type of samples you need to put into your portfolio, we’ll deep dive into what type of case studies you may need to provide for each role, how each case study should look and sound like, and what information to provide about your work. You will also review what should be covered in your resume and cover letter.

To help you do this, we will run through the baseline expectations of specific design roles in the industry, along with what is expected of each role. To prepare you to start building your portfolio, you will design or write the content in preparation for your build.

  • Week 4
    Designing your Portfolio

Design your portfolio using all the content you created and ensure you’re prepped for interviewing.

Once we’ve collected or created all the content for your portfolio in the previous week, we will start to look at the various tools you can use and the ways you can get your foot in the door.

We’ll run over the benefits of a Dribbble playbook, a self-hosted website, and a pitch presentation while defining out content for all three as efficiently as possible. You will be able to watch me design alongside you as you build your own.

  • Week 5
    Finding Jobs

Understand the many ways you can find a position at the beginning of your career, from the conventional to unconventional.

Finding directories of job listings is one way to look for a job and one that nearly everyone uses. This week we’ll consider other ways of finding your first roles to increase your chances of success.

Job hunting is a full-time job, and you should treat it as such. The more outreach you can do, the better your chances of success.

  • Week 6
    Interview Prep

Get ready with your new portfolio to present yourself in the best light during the interview process.

After you have made it into the interview funnel, you will find that every company is interviewing in a completely different way! To calm your nerves, we’ll prepare for the interview process.

This week we’ll go over the stages of the interview process, what you should be looking for, what to do during craft interviews, and how to handle negotiation conversations. You will practice with your mentor and receive feedback on how you conducted yourself. This feedback will help you smooth over any rough edges and give you an opportunity to build confidence before you start hunting yourself.

  • Week 7
    Portfolio Presentations

Practice your portfolio presentations–the most daunting of all the interview stages!

After all that prep, it wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t practice as much as possible with as many different types of people as possible. There’s no hiding this week!

Using the portfolios you built in the previous weeks, you will present your portfolio to yourself, your peers, and your mentor to ensure you can collect as much feedback as possible before you’re in the interview process yourself. You will have an opportunity to identify low-hanging fruits and set goals to improve on in the future.

  • Week 8
    First Few Months

Set yourself up for success by laying out a growth plan which works for you.

Starting a new role can be very exciting and nerve-wrecking! While you may be assigned a new manager immediately, and hopefully a very good one, it’s good practice for you to define your own goals when you join a company and set yourself up for success.

We’ll talk about what to expect in your first month and walk you through a goal-setting template to help you ramp up quickly.
