Here is an illustration I am working... still have a lot to do with shading and adding details. Having a blast figuring out how to take this style to the next level.

I'm a big fan of variable stroke weights, but I don't think that's really your style.
Overall, the concept is solid. Perhaps consider darkening the water (to emphasize the light coming through the hole)?
Yo - This is all really nice and all but it doesn't look 'cold out' / are they in a shack? I think maybe a cool night outdoor scene would be sweet. I think if it was an outdoor shot maybe make the ice a little jagged? Also, I like Anton's idea of the water maybe a little darker and make some cool little particles showing throughout in the water.
I love the mustache.
Some wood grain behind them to suggest a shack/housing could be really cool.
Or some mountains in the background to suggest some barren ice wasteland.
Ice fishing! Canada FTW!
That shading. Very nice.
All so happy! I love their little noses.
This is rad! Where are they located? Are they in northern Wisconsin or Cananda or Alaska? Maybe some setting could help.
