Not sure if this kind of perspective works or not. My eye is uncomfortable with it since it changes the plane that normal iOS UI is viewed with. There might be a middle ground where this is acceptable.
Also, the pattern could be messing with me since its a block pattern that is not taking on the perspective.
I have to agree with your thoughts. I've rarely seen cases where the forced perspective actually worked to improve the design on iOS, it just creates an uneasy feeling.

Changed the perspective to be flatter, changed the lighting to be higher and overhead. I think this is starting to work.

If this is for an iPhone, i found small subtle patterns don't really show up very well. The same effect with just a gradient and noise would work.
For an iPad, it could work but its so subtle, I would almost ask why...
