@Sascha Right now spectators will be able to follow and like. We'll consider comments when we're stable with the new growth, but it'll have to come part & parcel with some notion of invitation/reputation. Too much potential for abuse to simply open that up to all.
@Lorenzo Good question. We'll be watching likes carefully to see how player v. spectator likes correlate. We'll adapt our popular algorithm as needed.
@Chris You caught us with our uniform shorts down :) I thought all traces of this were wiped from the site, but I missed that one. Rectified. (So it never happened :)
@Rich: Thanks for the info. Looking forward to it. Maybe, you could hand out spectator invites the same way you send out the real ones?! Think 5 spectator invites for someone who gets a real one and a limitation on likes/follows a spectator can make each month/week/ or day (in line with Lorenzo's valid concern)
@Rich About the popular algorithm, I have no idea how it works, but I think it's mostly based on the like count and time. What if also views would be taken into account. But not that a lot of views count more, actually less!!!
So "500 views / 100 likes" should be more popular than "1000 views / 100 likes". But of course only if they reach a certain amount of views/likes. A "10 views / 5 likes" should still count less. That way dribbblers with less followers, Tweet-power have a bigger change to make it.
Now the downside.. if people realize that, they might stop tweeting, linking to their shots which is bad for dribbble's business and we don't want that either. So yeah.. just a thought I had.
@simurai I think you hit the nail on the head at the end there. People wont share it :S so it sorta shoots Dribbble in the foot.
One thing I've thought though, there IS A DIFFERENCE between a view from a Dribbble user and a view from just anybody :) Maybe something could be done with that stat.
Good idea but I think (negative) that we should try and limit the amount of users and have all content and feedback very high quality. I know I sound like a party pooper but I would like it to stay exclusive if you know what I mean!
I think it's wrong to let spectators like a shot. You don't feel great about the work you do and the amount of time you spend doing some time of work when someone with no design history at all with the name of XxdriblesuckssXx likes your shot. You get what I'm saying? It could completely ruin the quality of dribbble. Not to mention all the spammers/trollers that could generate. Now THAT would really ruin the quality of dribbble.
If it was up to me, I would let spectators follow you and nothing more.
Agreed mostly with @Nik — I wouldn't let spectators like a shot, however, I'd let them like comments, make a comment themselves, and follow people. However, if spectators were by invite them self as well, it might be okay that they can like a shot.
Well we can always let spectators like shots (since liking is also a way to bookmark shots), but just not factor it in the total. This way everybody's happy.
There should be a section for spectators that can like/comment etc. but wont affect the actual users shots, so it's like a dribbble but just for spectators, it would be useful for us designers to know what clients like the most, so there should be a spectators popular page, just to see what they might like.
Yeah I agree with pedja!
It should give you some fame when spectators like your stuff, but the real prestige is still to get fame on the "original" Dribbble.
I'm with elyse on this. Filter 'em so i can see the difference. I get a kick out of when you and @simplebits like my shots... there's something special about an all-star all up in your page that makes dribbble awesome.
I agree with the others. Liking shots should be reserved for players only. And I think you should limit the amount of comments spec's can make so it doesn't get abused.

Don't you think that if anybody can "like" a shot, the quality and the importance of the vote will lower?
Or maybe I haven't get it! :)

How about just separating the likes from dribbble users vs spectators? So that the number includes both, but clarifies that they're different.
