I designed these cursors back in April of 2009 as part of research to find out if we could create better hand style cursors than the Micky Mouse ones we have all grown accustomed too. But which are kinda weird, and outdated.
Note that the hand cursor used in the Kaleidoscope Image Scope actually animates open and shut.
I like these a lot but I still find it weird to have an app that uses different mouse cursors than every other app on my system. Kaleidoscope feels a bit too “custom” to me in this regard.
@Thijs I can understand it maybe being a bit weird. I consider it a sport to try and push the boundaries on detailed items such as a cursor, especially when I think the "default" is clearly outdated, even if that means it's a bit weird. All change requires getting used to.
@Jasper I know why Sofa in general and you in particular like to push the envelope and I sure appreciate that. It’s just that I now want the hand and zoom cursors to look like that on OS X by default. ;)
In an unrelated note; these make me think of the Amiga Magic Workbench visual style.
@Thijs if that's the effect I think I did my job properly :)
I actually still love the Amiga Magic Workbench and Mac Platinum interface styles. Ever notices how the "aqua" style from has slowly evolved to being less round and colorful to more rectangular and monochrome?
Amiga Magic Workbench! Oh man, that brings back some good memories.
Also, I agree that the current system cursors feel a bit outdated. Would be good for them to receive a nice refresh (like the icons here). I find Adobe's cursors even worse than the default Mac ones: they're like Apple's, but with no antialiasing or shadows.
@Jasper Oh, I sure noticed. As you might imagine I never really liked the original Aqua. What we have no is much, much nicer even though the default scrollbar now feels out of place.
I don’t really like Apple’s latest title bar experiments with iTunes and the Mac App Store though.
They're nice, but all I can think about are games that have custom cursors. It always urks be, as the cost to re-wire my brian is always so high. It would have to be a system wide thing, if at all. Which makes it seem very Linux to me.

Never realized just how crappy the default hand is. It's going to bother me quite a lot, now that you've pointed it out!
The good news is, yours do look brilliant. Top work.
