I've got to be completely honest here when I say I'm enamored with the direction here. I'm a huge fan of the style you've come up with here and I like the type choices you've made. Specifically the 'layered' consistency you've formed with the same type at the top and bottom (at least in the crop). If I had to suggest a revision, I'd begin with the type used for 'DESIGN EXPLANATION' and 'DESIGN PRACTICE' as they feel a bit out of place since you're not using all caps in that type anywhere else, but you are with the other type. I'm thinking you didn't want to compete with the headlines below, but perhaps playing with that a bit will really top things off, at least for me.
At first, the flat look came off as appearing possibly (and very subtly) unfinished, but after coming back to check it out a few more times I'm becoming more and more sold. It really pulls off a truly clean, refined look, where a texture of some sort would probably just really busy things up.
Great job, Kevin. I'm honestly looking forward to seeing the design in full (as well as the new publications)! I don't mean to be the only one to criticize, and it's only because I've nit picked this thing since you posted it, and all I could come up with is a type suggestion. Long story short: you win.
Wow. I'm thrilled with the feeback here. Thanks everyone.
@Jonathan The smaller, all capped "DESIGN EXP." and "DESIGN PRACTICE" are design elements that I wavered on for a while myself. I toyed with icons as a replacement, but ended up reverting to this unique all caps treatment because I felt it was a bit more effective. Since you've mentioned it, I'll certainly take some time to reconsider some other options.
I'm glad you like the flat, simple look. I'm definitely going for a minimal look, relying on shapes, structure and typography rather than textures. Often times, I see textures, noise, gloss, etc. used as a crutch, in design, and I wanted to avoid that at all costs.
Once this project is complete, I'm going to write a comprehensive review of the process, rhyme and reason put behind every decision.

Ouch, this is so good it hurts. It's the kind of thing that makes you think "now why can't I come up with something like this?"
