I really love the iPod icon, but yeah, I don't think the phone works very well. I think it's probably the gloss that makes it look odd, but the color and glyph don't fit in too awesome either.
@Zachary Why not just shrink a wallpaper down? I think what you have might look weird because the gradient on the screen makes it look like it's angling in. Just play around with different colors and angles until you get it just how you want it :)
One of the reasons why I dislike this particular species of phone metaphor is because
1. It becomes too subjective (e.g., people add a wallpaper.)
2. People cannot replicate UI elements accurately, and if they do, the screen ratio inevitably ruins it anyway.
3. Applying nothing on the screen results in a fairly unsatisfactory (almost incomplete) icon.
I've heard that you don't want to do any glyphed icons, so one other alternative is to replicate the iPhone 4's glass back, using the same concept.
I agree with you Dustin, wholeheartedly. The iPhone isn't a single function device, using it to represent a phone is missing the boat a bit. Also, something really bugs me about seeing an icon of an iPhone on an iPhone, like using a word in it's definition. I feel alright about the iPod icon because clearly Apple is moving toward this type of a design for the entire iPod lineup. The real problem is that the music application on the iPhone is still called "iPod," super dated.
But I don't want plain glyphed icons! I think that's a bit of a cop out as well, so I'm at a standstill when it comes to phone, messages, etc.
Without being too self-serving, I really liked my solution to "glyphs." They're not the typical standard white glyphs on a background, they're more styled. It's sort of a compromise between glyphs, and then realistic objects.
Feel free to take inspiration from them, if that's a route you'd like to pursue.
If you don't do any of the above (and I don't expect to you), I'd really advise against doing what other themes have done and use an actual representation of a phone (usually an "antique" phone), I think that's tacky, and doesn't work nearly as well as some form of glyph.

Very boring... I'm dissatisfied with this style of Phone icon, but everyone is doing it so I gave it a shot. Any thoughts about the screens there?

The screen on the phone is a total placeholder, I can't decide what fits. I loathe shrinking UI elements into an icon, but not much else makes sense.

I really like the one on the right, maybe somehow take that and thin down the edges and make some tweaks to make it more iPhone-esque?

Or there's always keeping the screen off?

Kris, I've never liked using the iPhone as a metaphor for phone. I don't think it works.
And if you do only the back, I think it leads to some confusion with Camera.
Zach, iPod is great! Phone less so.

How about making the icon it's self a phone booth? http://cl.ly/1H2d030h0s3q2E1M1b15
Might be fun!
