My lovely wife Laura is starting up a tuition business, specialising in Spanish. This is my first go at a logo for her; there will doubtless be many revisions until I'm happy with it, but this is a start.
@Dave Coleman That's a hard question. What I notice a bit distracting is that the logo is in a sketchy style, "laura's" is in a gritty style and "Tutoring" is in a bold style.
@Isaac Grant™ - Ah that's what I need bro, thanks. Really helpful thoughts, I'll keep working on it. Might clean each element up in the same way to being them into line. Cheers Isaac.
@Paul Morel - Yeah I definitely feel like there's something off-putting about the logo overall - needs some refining. I think I'll stick to the style of the Laura more than anything else, and work from there. Thanks for the input!
It's a great start -- you mention that something feels off-putting, it might be that the book is in perspective (basically looking down at it in 3pt perspective) but the logotype is straight on. Maybe you could try pulling the book back more straight on or tweaking the type so it mirrors the book's perspective? Just thinking about that relationship.
Contrary to semi-popular opinion I actually enjoy the contrast between "Laura's"--which is a bit more personal and human in that rough, scripty type--and "tutoring"--which is in a clean type suggesting something more formal like education.
I thought "wallet" too when I first saw the book/flag combo and now I can't unsee it.
What's bothering me the most is the placement of "tutoring". Firstly, that the curve that tutoring is aligned around is ever so slightly off compared to the swash of the L (its curve looks slightly flatter), and the angle of the letters somehow doesn't seem to match with the way the letters in "Laura's" are angling. It also doesn't seem to be centered with anything (neither the book or "Laura's") so it just seems a bit oddly placed. I'd try perhaps having it run the width of "aura" to see if that makes the whole thing feel more balanced. Hope that feedback wasn't way too oddly specific ;P
I have been mulling over this one for a while - I want this logo to be just right for Laura!
Initially I was just going to tweak the last version (see the rebounded shot), but I decided to redraw the lot. I am happy with this one, but not sure whether I should vectorise the letters, or keep it hand drawn and rough.

@Caleb Amesbury She's gonna make it rain. @Dave Coleman has thought this through with a dash of clairvoyance.

I second Isaac`s comment. I'm not sure which I like the most though. But the sketchy style of the logo just works so well.
I'm torn.

@Jola Pez - Jols you're a gem and a half. Such good thoughts. I will work on those exact things - thanks :)
And not at all too specific - that's the stuff I want to hear! Cheers J!
