Typically, if the surf is gonna be good, you inform your friends, and make a plan (unless you like surfing solo).
Local surf forecast charts on the right, stream of followed activity on the left. Starting out with a vanilla, but flexible interface for posting updates and engaging with followers, with no assumptions made.
Developing this functionality and related ajax stuff has been a good precursor to this.

Just working on activity feeds for Surftourist as we speak. Has been interesting learning about fly-out-on-write stuff, and what else goes on under the hood for lots of activity feeds out there.
