   I'm working on a tool that allows you to build online courses (think power point, but with infinitely nested screens/objectives, custom layouts, tracking, and a lot more).

   Being a *content building* tool, I thought it was wise to always be one-click away from creating something new. So this big NEW button was the approach I took (or at least, where it currently stands). It will pop up an overlay menu for everything you can create in the system.

   The sidebar content itself updates based on what you're working on. Here it's just showing the default view. I'm using a solid background color and an inset box-shadow to differentiate it from the background pattern.

   As explained in the original shot, this is the pop-up menu that overlays the page giving access to create new things.
   
   I'm not sold on the color or the icon, but I like the big block links for sure. It's forgiving when you're trying to get through the menu quickly.
