@Todd I agree in theory, that might be the best overall. Alas, some icons are already lighter, there's lots of different shades (12 total that I'm using). Oh, and I switched sets to use Paul Lloyd's.
Also, I don't think the active state is gonna be that noticeable unless a user clicks and holds. Here's the test site.

I'm putting together a one page design for my personal site to direct visitors to other places they can find me on the web.
The Facebook button in this shot is the active state. The Twitter button is the hover state (slightly more bottom shadow).
I'm using re-colored versions of Rogie King's quite awesome social icons.
I appreciate any suggestions for how to make this better.

linking what I see so far, but I might make the icons a contrasting lighter color on the active state and vice a versa. Did that make sense?

Oh, and I pulled off the gradients, shadowing, etc with just CSS, so the active state particularly isn't identical to the shot above.
