@Mike - Just lines expanded to outlines, chopped up with pathfinder tools. All the breaks are mathematically even / proportional overlaps.
As far as knowing 'where' to break the lines, it really boils down to what looks best (I.E. A bit of back & forth). For designs like this, I like to think about them existing in a 3D space, as if I built it with my hands from the get go (I.E. Can I make this?) I think about how the light would play, and then I take some creative liberties to strike a balance between stylization and clarity.
