I agree that the cog isn't working. The problem I have with appmakr's logo is the spacing of the rectangle on the top/bottom. It's seems so unnecessarily large 'a space
I like the idea of the top one, although the "a" is too big and chunky in comparison to the rest of the type. I think if you balance those out so that it doesn't read "A ppmaker" you might have a quality logo there!
Oh and also if you find a new font that is a bit more round, Avenir etc. So that the cog fits in there better it would look nicer as well.
Top with a bit of work. Use the "a" as either a mark, with addtl type or make it the same pt size as the rest of the logotype. The bottom feels very generic and unmemorable.
To be honest, I really don't like either. There I said it. But if I had to choose, it would be the second one. I just see some awesome fun/professional logo for this great name. But it's not really popping out for me.
Don't get me wrong, they are both nice, I just can see something more creative. :)
We really don't know the criteria and what it needs to accomplish. I can only guess that this logo is going to be used much like Apple's "App Store." If so, it needs to be minimal, memorable and versatile. Something that will not compete or draw attention away from the app.
With that said, I would go with the bottom one. Us designers often get too wrapped up in making things look pretty, flashy and design-heavy that we use sight on what the goal is. We design to solve a problems and not to just make things look pretty.
Well, Dribbble doesn't seem to like me posting a rebound, but I was going to suggest looking into adding a ratchet to the lower-right corner of the gear to see if it would work as an "a" on its own, without the letterform. My quick draft doesn't look all that great, but I think it could work if executed by someone far more capable than me. :) Just a thought, anyway.
EDIT: As a side note, I'm surprised ratchets aren't used more often, given how often gears are used.
I like the idea of the cog inside the 'a' but I'm not at all a fan of Rounded Arial/Helvetica. If you're to pull off the cog, then you should find a typeface without a spur (I think that's the correct term) on the letter 'a'.
Also on a side note.. not a fan of the red/blue combo.

Top.
However, could do with a little more work. I think the cog idea inside the 'a' cavity isn't quite working.

How about the "a" inside the box. You can combine them and then have the name spelled out as well. But the 'a' still needs work.
Hope that makes sense.

I think @Marty could be on to something - shame the rebound wouldn't post.
I prefer the 2nd one, but I'm not a huge fan of either.
