I work off of a picture on my computer and i use lots of very light layers of color (prismacolor, colored pencils) Keep the pencils very sharp when approaching an edge. Also the more time one spends looking at a photograph, the more changes in light or color they would see. I have to ask Nick, do you start a portrait by drawing simple forms, proportions and construction, adding detail later, or do you just start with details and guess proportions by freehand?
@John Mikael I have to admit that i do use what i call, a primitive grid. So the grid helps the general proportions. (at least i did at the time i made this piece) thanks for your interest tho
